In July, TWIC welcomed Nigel Lawton as our new GIS and Data Officer.

Nigel’s passion for the natural world began at a young age, as he was an avid fossil hunter. This early interest led him to pursue an MSci in Geology at the University of Bristol. During his studies, Nigel participated in several field trips to the north-west of Scotland, where he fell in love with the landscape. He is now thrilled to be back in the country, working to secure and protect its natural environment.

In recent years, Nigel completed a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research focused on using satellite imagery, earth observation, and GIS to understand and map urban growth and change.

Outside of his professional life, Nigel enjoys hiking, bird watching and wildlife photography, activities that align with his commitment to environmental conservation.

Nigel is excited about his new role at TWIC and looks forward to contributing to the organisation’s mission. “I am passionate about using technology to protect our natural world and am eager to bring my expertise to TWIC,” he says.
