Carrion beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Silphinae) are a fascinating group of insects, that play a vital role in our ecosystems. In this workshop you will learn about the weird and wonderful natural history of Carrion beetles, monitoring methods and how to confidently identify these beetles to species. The workshop will be composed of an introductory talk, a brief collections tour and identification session using both hand lenses and microscopes.
Suitable for: beginners (ages 16 and over)
Duration: Circa 3 hours 30.
Cost: Choose either the free ticket type or the donation ticket type (minimum donation £1). Donations to TWIC will support our work in organising biological recording training workshops and events.

Workshop leader: Ashleigh Whiffin is an entomologist, specialising in carrion beetles. She is the curator of entomology at the National Museums Collection Centre in Edinburgh. Ashleigh also works with several entomological groups such as the Royal Entomological Society, and the British Entomological and Natural History Society to promote her subject. She also works with the Biological Records Centre to co-organise the National Recording Scheme for Carrion Beetles.
Travel: This venue is accessible by public transport (including lothian buses n8, n9, n14, n19 and n22). On-street parking is available (but please note it may be full as it is public parking).
